I have a friend almost exactly in your situation as listed above. Like almost to a T. How she learns? She's in college but not full time but her REAL learning is in the clubs she's in. Books vs. People? People give you more knowledge you can use. She also volunteers a ton at many different places. Again, people. She has a lot of heath problems so she seeks out alternative medicines which is an interesting side study. By the way, she also does art. When I first saw a print of one of her black and white sketches I seriously thought it was of a black and white photograph. So yes in short, people will help you learn AND grow and you can choose who those people are (A.K.A. what clubs or volunteer centers).
