How to describe it...well, it's in photoshop and so, once I have a base layer of the colours, I make another layer over top, set my brush to multipy, with a medium opacity level (around 50-60)and then grab the domiant dark shade from the background (in this case, the deep reddish brown) and then go ovre all the areas that will be in shadows. I do a few layers in each area, so that I get all the different shades in the skin clothes etc...and then I grab all the highlight colours and lightly drag them over the areas that will be highlighted.
This now gives me a full colour palette for when i start shading them. After that, it's just a lot of painting and blending, all on a layer above the one with my colours....
Not exactly something I could do without a damn lot of practice, but I love the result you get from it. Of course, your coloring skills are just awesome anyway.
