So, I'm trying to stay all cheerful and hopeful and then...

My only source of portable music dies.

I now have no music to keep me sane on my walks, at school or while animating. It's a big deal to me (as I'm sure most people who live off music would probably agree) and since my classes don't start till 3 tomorrow, I'm going to try and brave the mall (and the cold) and get a new one.

I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations. I just got one of my bursaries, so I have some money to spare but would kind of like opinions from people who are not out to steal as much money from me as possible.

So brands, types, etc... Anything that has worked well for you would be awesome to hear about.

Thanks.

I...don't know what brands are available where you are, so I apologize if what I'm talking about players you couldn't even get, but first off I'm going to day: don't buy an iPod. They are definitely not worth it. They cost far more than most other MP3 players, and as far as I can tell it's purely name recognition.

So. Because of...complications, I actually have two mp3 players, both of which I'm very happy with. First off I have a Zen Stone which has extremely simple and intuitive software and is pretty damn dependable, but only goes up to 2GB of storage space.

Next, I have a Zune. There was recently some sort of issue with the older 30GB Zunes freezing, but I think that got fixed, and I've never had problems with them (I have the 8GB). Also, the 4/8/16GBs are really small and can easily fit in my pocket almost imperceptibly.

So, uh. My two cents.

I have an ipod and love it, but those are pricey. I had a sansa once, and it was total win. If I hadn't gotten the ipod as a gift, I would have gotten another sansa. My mother swears by her Zen.

Ipods are pricey, but as far as I know they are the only ones with a high storage capacity (the smallest size for a classic ipod is 80GB i think)

So it depends on how much usic you are looking to carry around. Otherwise, I've heard very good things about Zen. My friend loved hers until she lost it.

If you're looking to save some money, ask the store if they have any open-package mp3 players. They usually haven't been used, but they can't sell them full price if the packaging has been broken, so this time of year they're really trying to get rid of unwanted Christmas gifts. =D I got my iPod 30% off that way.

I adore Sansa Sandisk, they do large flash players (up to 32GB) I like them because they are extremely durable, have a long battery life (The View player can go for 32 hours) I have a Sandisk e280 (previous generation) that's still going strong even after managing to get into some bad situations (like getting thrown across a room or dunked in water) It's the advantage of solid state over hard drive- no moving parts. They also don't skip like hard drive players are prone to do if you're jogging. They also have a micro SD chip slot to expand on memory (up to 16 GB on some of them). The bad: The system is pretty bare bones, it works with windows media player and naught else if you want playlists. The price is relatively expensive per GB in comparison to hard drive players. 8GB player costs $60 and the 32GB over $200 so if you're looking for enormous capacity then these are not for you. Also the screen is I think something like 2.4 inches. Also? Feature wise they are small, have a microphone, video player, photo gallery and radio. I like them because you can beat the hell out of them and they still will work. XD I'm afraid I don't have too much info on the hard drive players to compare and contrast with so that's up to you to do. I do however want to point out the massive Microsoft Zen glitch that hasn't been resolved as of yet. Good luck!

I have an iPod Shuffle which has lasted me three years so far. It's the first-gen kind, though--I don't know anything about the new model. I also have a Nano that was a freebie when I bought my laptop, but I don't use it as much because I don't have a good way to hold it when I'm skating or whatever. (I'm aware I'm paying extra for the name and the look when I buy Apple stuff, but damn, I just like the look so much. XD; So it's worth it for me.)

Of course, if you get a lesser known mp3 player, then you have a device that's not so picky about what you put on it. You can use it as a last-minute memory stick if you need to! XD That's what I do with my MobiBlu sometimes.

as much as I hate all things mac...(lol just because)...I would suggest an iPod...I think shuffles are the cheapest right now but that still runs you like...100 bucks I believe.

But...if you don't care about quality, I think ToysRUs has no name brands for like 20 bucks lol 1 or 2 gigs. It's not much but it's enough to listen to all of the songs before the battery dies heh

howevers, if you're looking for quality, I do suggest ipod or LG...I haven't had any troubles with mine and it's old as hell lol

iPod nano, mine has lasted through being dropped over thousands of times, survived being scraped on the ground under my ass due to ice, survived water, survived being lost for 2 days then found in a parking lot...4 gigs is very very good.
